Album Review : Prince Kudakwashe Musarurwa - Chinga Chikuru

Prince.K. Musarurwa is a afro jazz artiste known by many from the song Runonzi Rudo where he featured. Prince has over five years in the music scene. He has 4 albums to date namely : Kurarama (2011), Garamubere (2012), Gogodera (2013) and Chiga Chikuru (2015).

Prince Musarurwa is slowly making a name for himself in the Jazz community, he faces competition and comparisons from other Jazz artists such as Alexio Kawara, Victor Kunonga, Afrika Revenge and also from contemporary traditional artist Jah Pryazah. He is working very hard to be mentioned alongside the above mentioned stars.

He released Chiga Chikuru early this year. Came across the album over the holiday, gave it a listen and ya it deserves a review. Chiga Chikuru is a 7 track album and will be doing a track by track review below :

  • Chiga Chikuru :
One of the best deeds is this life is to be thankful. This song is about being thankful and appreciating others around you. The instrumental has some great mbira rhythms which offers the track a nice traditional feel. It has a nice video to go with it.

  • Haruperi Zvekumhanya :
Taking the street lingo and making a great song....nice. This is a love song, Prince is singing to his partner telling her that their love is strong and will not fade easily. Despite facing insults and pressures from family members their love will stand strong. This is that perfect song for newlyweds who face the the harshest criticism form family member and friends to do this and that. Love the track.

  • Mamoyo Wangu (Remix)  :
This is a remix to one of his more popular previous tracks. The song is now uptempo with some gospel sungura influenced instrumentals. This is a track about a guy who is showing his partner to everyone after they had teased him for being single. The guys is celebrating finally founding the one.

  • I Must Stick With You ft Daisy Hope :
This track is about sticking with your partner after going through thick and thin together. Many people wanted to stop the two of you form being together, and now that you have conquered the world you must stick together. Lovely track and the instrumentals induce that slow side to side dance.

  • Murume Wangu :
Prince is singing from the perspective of a grieving wife. A wife who has been left behind by her husband, and left to take care of the kids alone. The kids are living like orphans whilst their father is there. This is an emotional song as many single mothers can relate to this. Many men are selfish these days, choosing pleasure over taking care of their families. Powerful song.

  • Chakachaya NaSinyoro (Mnandi Remix) :
This is the party song of the album, this track is meant to get everyone on the dancefloor and have a blast. Love the hand drums on this track.

  • Mai Mwana Muri Mharadzi (I regret Ever Loving You) :
This is another emotionally charged song. Its about marrying someone hoping they will become a shoulder to lean on,your lover, the mother of your children and that person turn out to be a major headache. The wife will be causing problems in the family, causing the family to break apart. The instrumental on this track is heavenly, am enjoying it to bits. This is the best track on the album for me.

Prince Musarurwa gave us a solid offering on Chiga Chikuru. Although the album can't be named alongside albums such as Qaya Music by Africa Revenge, Tose by Alexio Kawara, Kwedu by Victor Kunonga or Jerusalema by Jah Prayzah, but its a great album to have and listen to. Prince is maturing by each album, he definitely deserve to be given attention.
