Diary Page 4: Biggest Braai

Image
So over the weekend Delta wanted to make history by holding the biggest braai in the history of Zimbabwe and they did pull it off. Well by the mere mention of Delta the turn-up was always going to be huge, Zimbo's and Beer go hand in hand like bhurugwa nebhande. So like anyone I also wanted to be part of history so gathered the guys and a plan was made.  After some search on google maps, we finally headed towards the beer & meat fest. We reached there at around 5 pm, after the sun had finished its show off. Parking was a challenge but well it's to be expected at any huge event. The first big challenge we faces was getting tickets....yjoooh there was so much commotion. One of our friends had to get into ninja mode in order to get in a position where he can buy tickets. We got out tickets and headed inside. Now as we got in noone really paid attention to the stage and music, the mind and focus was on redeeming the coupons and getting to the main event, braaing.

Track Review: Jam Signal - Overrated

Image
Zim Jam Signal is definitely one of my favourite groups on the local scene, if it was not for Mokoomba they would be my best group in the country. I love their sound and style. The last track they released was Orlando back in July, did a review of that track read review here ( Orlando Track Review ). This group keeps improving with each track, love the fact that they experiment with their sound so no two songs are alike. So when they announced that they will be releasing a new jam, I was glad and started my countdown immediately. Currently have been listening to a lot of Sauti Sol and I believe this group may emulate those guys on the continental scene. So the new song is finally released, lets see if it matches the expectations!!?? well my expectations??!! So they engaged the Showtime Records boss Reverb 7 for the production of this jam. Reverb is on a high right now with the success of Bryan K's Heavy Machine , another track he produced which is getting a lot of love fro

Album Review: Winky D - Gafa Futi ChiExtraterrestrial

Image
Winky D has finally released his much anticipated and awaited album Gafa Futi. Last year he released Gafa Life around the same period and it went on to become the anthem during the festive season and this year he is aiming to repeat last years feat. Last year when his album came out it too the limelight from Killer T's Ngoma Ndaimba which had been the best album for the first three quarters of the year, this year his major competition will be Freeman's Mangoma Ihobho. Will he be able to skip to the top again, will he be able to give us a track better than Soul Jah Luv's Hove Huru or Killer T's Takangodaro or Freeman's Zvakaipa Itai Ndisiye ??? Time will tell, so lets see how the album fares? Before we get to the track by track review, I have to say I believe  the Scandal that happened between Winky and Oskid was a marketing gimmick, the timing and lack of credible action is just suspicious if you ask me. The album contains 12 tracks and below is a track

Video and Track Review : Cindy Munyavi - Mubvunzo

Image
The queen of RnB Cindy Munyavi is back with a new jam. The last track she released was  Dai , it dropped end of July, did a review for the track, ( Dai Video and Track Review ). On this new offering Cindy is continuing with the new tradition of releasing a song together with the visuals, a tradition which I am a big fan of. She has been teasing us for weeks now about Mubvunzo and finally its here. So lets see how the jam fares. The track was produced by Shayzar Zimanyi and he did a good job. The the instrumental arrangement is modern, coupled with a tried and proven classic kick pattern and some nice keyboard work, the end result is a lovely sounding instrumental. Great work on the production.  The vocals are the winning part of the jam, Cindy is just amazing on the vocals. She went back to her best here, that Ndidzorere Moyo Wangu style and vibe. Dai is a good jam but tracks such as this, bring out the best from Cindy. The track is emotional, Cindy is crying out to the Lord

Album Review: Ti Gonzi - Hip Hopu YekuGhetto

Image
Ti Gonzi made a name for himself with the last year smash hit jam Zvenyu . The track came with a different type of vibe compared to the other hip hop tracks. Many could relate to what he was rapping about, he brought the ghetto to local hip hop. The track was followed by a fitting all star remix which contained some superb verses from Ti Gonzi himself, Munetsi and Papa Noble Stylez. The remix even managed to perform better than the original and earned him an award at the Zim Hip Hop Awards 2015. To follow on that success Ti Gonzi decided to release an album, which is titled Hip Hopu YekuGhetto. Reviewed the first single Ende Makaoma a couple of weeks back ( Ende Makaoma ft Ras Caleb ) and it had me counting down to the album. Now the album is out, lets see if it will be as good as I expected. The album contains 22 tracks and will be doing a track by track review below: 1. Kumaraini Kwangu Ti Gonzi is narrating what goes on in his hood on this jam. He is just praising hi

Album Review: Oliver Mtukudzi - Eheka Nhai Yahwe

Image
The legendary artists Oliver "Samanyanga" Mtukudzi has released his 65th album, 65th, 65th!!!!!!!!. That's an amazing feat. Now on a personal level the last Mtukudzi album I enjoyed was Wonai in 2006, all the others that followed (Tsimba Itsoka, Dairai, Rudaviro, Kutsi Kwemoyo, Abi Angu, Saraoga and Mukombe wemvura) did not do it for me, they failed to excite me or leave a lasting memory. My favoutite Tuku album is Paivepo if you were wondering. My expectations on this album are quite low but it may surprise me...so lets see how its fares. The album contains 12 tracks and will be doing a track by track review below: 1. Asina Ndiani   Lovely instrumental, the guitar work is good, bass line is simple but on point. Tuku gave his signature vocal performance, yes its still the same old Tuku Zim fell in love with. The track urges people to respect each other as we are all human and born of woman. Despite all our physical differences we are all human and should resp

Video Review: Tamy - Ndibereke

Image
Talking about some of the best offerings for 2016, Tamy's The 18th Roller Coaster comes to mind, its just so well made, so refreshing, its a must have. Many people may not be acquainted with her a the moment but if you a fan of radio you have definitely came across the tracks Ndibereke and Sango . Did a review of the album a couple of months back:  Album Review: Tamy - The 18th Rollercoaster . I was so delighted when I heard she was working on the visuals for my favourite track on her album, Ndibereke, then I also was afraid the video was not gonna do justice to the superb track and ruin the track for me. The video was directed by Nico Abote. The went more for an artistic angle rather than a flashy angle and that was a good move. The setting and background was well chosen, Tamy's wadrobe was on point, its hip, unique and stylish, I feel it should have been the same for the other people in the video though for more effect. The directing is simple but nice, good job by Nic

Video Review : Jah Prayzah - Mudhara Vachauya

Image
Jah is currently riding high with his album Mudhara Vachauya. Did a review of the album a couple of weeks back, read the review here: Album Review: Jah Prayzah - Mudhara Vachauya . He has now released the visuals for the title track and arguably the biggest single from the album at the moment. Jah used to release a DVD consisting of the visuals for all the tracks on an album about 6 months after the album is released but this year he changed that trend. He seems to be following the international trend whereby an artist will release visuals for the biggest single at that moment to help the single in the charts and other considerations. They went back to SA to shoot the visuals for this one, ( Watora Mari ft Diamond Platnumz was also shot in SA ). Molotovcocktail.tv was in charge of the production and  Nic Roux was the director for the video. They went for a lady waiting for his husband to come back from serving in a war scenario. The setting is a classic tried and tested romantic s

Album Review: Sharky - Soko Matemai (Deluxe Edition)

Image
If you one a fan of social media like me then you have probably came across the name Sharky. Sharky is a rapper from the satellite town of Chitungwiza and over the past couple of months he has been making a lot waves with his music. Local hip hop is not at the top yet but it is making some serious strides.  What I love about the genre now is the diversity in terms of sound and style. So after the Shoko festival I was hyped to learn more about local hip hop and that gave me the power to finish up my review of Sharky's Soko Matemai album. So lets see how it fares??  The title of the album is taken from Sharky's Totem, Soko Matemai. The album contains 21 tracks and will be doing a track by track review below: 1. Mitupo (Interlude) This interlude signals and sets the tone for the album. On this interlude they are just mentioning the various totems. Lovely start to an album. 2. Soko Matemai On this track Sharky is asking his ancestors to lead him on this journey of

My Best Movies From Zimbabwe.

Image
The Zimbabwean movie industry has had its low and highs. The majority of the Zimbos however do not remember the good times. With the Zimbabwe International Film Festival currently going on, I thought of doing my part for the local film industry. Honestly there haven't been a  lot of awesome movies on the local scene but there has been a few memorable ones and those are the ones i'm concentrating on today. Wanted to give you 10 of the best local movies I have watched but could only come up with 6 so ya below are 6 of my favourite locally made movies. 6. Lobola This movie managed to give me a couple of laughs, the plot and acting was okay. Their take on the Lobola customs was quite funny. When it came out it gave us hope that the local film industry was about to improve but then after the movie the industry fell back to its dormant state.  5. Jit (1990) This 1990 Michael Raeburn movie is definitely one of the best local movies I've seen on the local scene. It

Track Review: Dboi & Sparxx Feat. Tytan - Ndiwayinire

Image
Dboi & Sparxx made my festive season last year, was in Mutare for the holiday and the way Energy was loved in Mutare you couldn't help but love the track also. I remember searching for the track like a crazy person after the festive holiday and after some serious searching I finally found it, ( mind you I did not know the name of the artist(s) or track name, just knew the lyrics and tune! ). From then I was a big fan of the duo. I'm from Mutare so having someone representing the city made me very proud. Now its summer time again and the guys are back with a new jam!!! Will they be able to keep Mutare and probably Zim dancing again as they did last year?? Dj Tamuka was behind the production on this track, and he did a superb job. Dj Tamuka is definitely the best Afro Beat producer in the country hands down, he has been behind most of the big afro beat jams of 2016 and this track will  add to that list. Love the structure of the instrumental, the bass line is soundin
