Mixtape Review : Brythreesixty - Purple Mars

Brythreesixty has finally released his much publicized Purple Mars Mixtape. 2016 is more like a do or die year for him. He has to show if he can compete with the best and in a year dubbed by many as the Year of Zim Hip Hop he is gonna have to put in more work than before. So how does Purple Mars fare??

Will be reviewing my top 4 tracks from the Purple Mars Mixtape and will leave  the others for you the fans and readers to rate!!
  • God Feeling (Sikelela) ft J.S.K.X.X.V.I
The first thing you hear is the nice laid instrumental which am loving. God Feeling is about feeling like a boss regardless of the current challenges and putting your trust in God. Success starts from within and this track is about having a winner's mentality. In terms of the verses both the guys were in beast mode and they gave superb verses. Was enjoying the track till the last Nkosi Sikelela chant in the end, it sounded as if it's not at the same wave length as the rest of the track, better mixing was needed there. In overall the track is quite good.

  • Ghetto ft Dexter Baysiq
This song is a celebration of Ghetto life. Unlike most of the sad ghetto songs that we hear this track celebrates Ghetto life...because let's be honest its not always bad in the ghetto (also problems are everywhere ghetto, suburb, uptown...etc), also some of the best life experiences are experienced in the ghettos, most music legends come from the Ghettos, social lingo and trends emanate from the ghetto. On top of the great theme the instrumental is also dope, Bry is more about Trap but he left that for a more feel good bouncy uptempo instrumental. Bry was amazing on the verses, to me this is one of the best if not the best I've heard from him. Dexter Baysiq also outdid himself on his verse. In overall this is a solid track. It's my favourite track on the Mixtape.

  • Joy on Mars (Affirmation)
When Bry denounced the CHH label many thought he was no longer going to be singing Gospel music but it was just because he did not want to be subjected to genre limitations and expectations, he wanted to be free and make music as he felt it. Joy on Mars is a sermon on a beat. It serves to give strength and urge fellow brethrens to keep on living a Godly life despite the worldly forces and challenges they face. The instrumental is the star of the show here, Mclyne did a great job on the instrumental, its sounding great and is complementing the sermon greatly. At 02:36 the beat seems to restart or maybe the loop was over or it's by design I don't know but t removes some points from the track. Those CHH fans who were worried thinking Bry has left them will be very pleased with this track. Great Track.

  • Android Girls vs Symbian Guys
The title of the track caught my attention before anything. They employed a simple but proven method for the instrumental and its sounding nice. The best part of this track are the lyrics, it addresses the issues being faced by many on the dating scene. These days its more about what I can get from a relationship rather than Love. Bry is warning other guys to be clever because some of these Ladies are using all kinds of the tactics to attract and snare guys and before you know it she would have wiped you clean, "Anokurova Bag". Bry's delivery was on point, the verses are very audible. and the chorus is also on point; simple & catchy. Simba Tagz would have killed this chorus, such choruses are his home ground. In overall this is a good track.

In overall this is a pretty good Mixtape. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. For some reason I thought the tracks would be filled with self praise lyrics and American -esque trap instrumentals but he proved me wrong (well most of the times). Shame on me!!!. What I liked the most is the he showed how diverse he can be, giving social conscious tracks like Ghetto, Android Girls vs Symbian Guys, coupling with motivational tracks like God Feeling, Joy on Mars. In some instances the production quality is weak but well this is a mixtape so cannot grind him much about that. Hopefully we get an album before end of year.

When Bry denounced the CHH label I just presumed that it was a publicity stunt and I thought he was not gonna be able to match up the other secular rappers. However after listening to Purple Mars  I can safely say he definitely has what it takes to compete with the big guys.

What are your thoughts on the Purple Mars Mixtape??
