Track Review : Zim Jam Signal - Jikina

Zim Jam Signal is house fusion/jazz band made up of three guys namely : Abel Maunga, Mutsawashe Gudlanga and Osborne Matengenzara. Zim Jam Signal has been having shows around Harare for some months now and are making a good name for themselves. The group is now evolving from a jazz/house fusion band to an afro pop band. With many artists right now preferring the computerized type of music, Zim Jam Signal is aiming at producing similar sounding songs but with the use of a live band.....quite brave. Jikina is their first track since choosing the afro pop kind of beat so how does it sound??

The instrumental is sounding quite great. Love the modern techno Fuse ODG kind feel of the instrumental. The best part of the song for me is from 2:01 when they introduced the saxophone...it changes the whole song and brings a new dimension to the instrumental, it gave the song this salsa feel which one doesn't hear much this side of the world. Repeated that part for like 10 times, its heavenly and refreshing. If they implement live instruments like that more in their next offering it will take them far.

Jikina means dance. This song is about enjoying yourself and dancing. The guys sounded like Nigerians in the first verse and more like Roki on the chorus, don't know if my ears are deceiving me but that's what am hearing. They did a great job on the vocals for guys who did not do much singing previously.

In overall the song sounds great and is a move in the right direction for the guys. This will get quite a lot of airplay on urban radio stations. However in this path they have chosen they gonna have to work hard because they will be directly competing with Soul Afrika another all male Afro Pop group who are already quite know and loved. Zvisinei Zimbabwe is big, they need not compete there is space for both. Looking forward to more great songs from Zim Jam Signal.

For those who wonder what kind of music they were making before listen to this one....my favourite from them:
