Songs Of Freedom

My dear country has been facing economic meltdown for years now, after the dollarization in 2009 we all thought it was going to be better but that was just a dream. What followed was a period of mass corruption which led to further deterioration of the economy. The majority of Zimbos have been crying to those in power for answers and holding on to the hope that they will act and make decisions and actions that will lead to a better Zimbabwe.

An unexpected ray on light, a leader in the form of Pastor Evans Mawarire emerged from oblivion and renewed the hope that we as Zimbabweans can unite and make our country great again. He has been rallying up Zimbabweans to unite for a better Zimbabwe and not be content with a life of struggle, yekukiya kiya, living from month to month but to unite and make a country and future which our children and grandchildren will enjoy.

During this movement there has been many calls for our local artists to join in an use their influence for the good of the nation. Some are willing to be at the forefront musically and support the #ThisFlag movement and some are not. We as the fans cannot force an artists to do support in a way which they are not comfortable with but by being a public figure several artists are inevitably going be a subject to a lot of attacks from the public, the disadvantages of being popular. Regardless of that this article is concentrating on those artists who have decided to go into the studio and do what they do best and stand with the people.

Munya Matarutse - Nhodo
This very emotional track talks about the feeling the majority of Zimbos have. Being played like a game, we have no say we only do as told. Many of us feel powerless to even affect change, laws are just changed abruptly, we have no say at all. Deep Deep track.

Seh Calaz - Officer
On this track Calaz is complaining about the excessive amount of roadblocks in our roads. This is leading to a lot of corruption on the part of officers who will in turn ask for bribes so as to let the vehicle pass.

Lloyd Tevedzai - Tumirai Ngirozi
Lloyd is crying out to the Lord for what is happening in Zimbabwe. The police brutality, the corruption. Divine intervention is needed in Zimbabwe.

Mai Shingisai Suluma - Masuwo (Watipindura)

The Legendary Mai Shingisai Suluma is celebrating the success of the movement and the release of Pastor Evans Mawarire. She is saying our prayers have been answered. Powerful track.

These are the tracks I know of so far. Hope many artists go into the studio and stand by their fans in this time of need.
