Album Review : Seh Calaz - Bandit Rebirth

The hottest dancehall act in the country Seh Calaz has released his debut album. The album is named Rebirth!!! Judging by his current songs and those from the album, it shows Calaz is serious on his stance of becoming more socially conscious in his music. He has left the dissing and violent themes. After the immense support and success Tocky Vibes received last year due to his meaningful, clean and constructive lyrics, he changed the dancehall scene in the country. With major success with song such as Shanda , Ndinochema & Kwatinobva, Seh Calaz has continued with releasing more meaningful and socially conscious songs and the album follows suit.

The album was produced at the new and highly rated Kenako Studios located in Borrowdale led by Oskid and Dj Tamuka. Cashlibs and Body slam Records also played a part in the production. It consists of 9 songs.  I Have taken time to listen to the album and will be reviewing song by song below.

1) Seh Calaz - Vabereki Vangu : The song is on a reggae tip (am a big fan of reggae). On this song he is asking his parents where his bad luck is coming from. He asks where his name comes from and if there is anything unfinished in the past that's causing him the misfortunes. At the same time he is acknowledging the importance of parents in providing blessing to a child. Love the saxophone part, it gives the song that rich classy feel. Amazing song.

2) Seh Calaz - Hossana : This is practically a gospel dancehall song. On this song Calaz is encouraging people to pray whilst we still have the time, emphasizing that we do not know the future  hence praying will help make a better future. Love the chorus in the last half of the song, it has that Mapostori song feel to it which is great. Another awesome song.

3) Seh Calaz - Munodarirei : On a reggae tip this song is discouraging abortions. This is quite a big problem in the youth of today, a lot of sexual activities leading to a lot of abortions. A great socially conscious song.

4) Seh Calaz - Rega Vacheme ; This song encourages the youth to listen to their parents and guardians when they give advice. Calaz is discouraging rebellious attitude, which will later make you regret. Listening to advice is very important in the growing up of anyone. Great song.

5) Seh Calaz - Amai : This song is for all those who have lost their mothers. He is encouraging them to be strong and believe in the Lord for he will comfort and strengthen them. The flute at the end is just awesome.Touching and Powerful Song.

6) Seh Calaz ft Etherton - Usamurove ; This one is dancehall unlike the first 5 which are more reggae. He features Judgement's yard Etherton. On the songs he discourages domestic violence, an issue which is rampant in the various ghettos around the country. This song returns back to the basics and familiar sound of Zimdancehall songs all over the country. Nice Song.

7) Seh Calaz - Taparara : Moving on with the advisory role, Seh Calaz discourages multiple sex partners and unprotected sex, reminding people of HIV AIDS. He is crying for his fellow brothers and sisters to be faithful and have self control as AIDS is killing a lot of people. Edutainment at its best.

8) Seh Calaz - Kurarama : On this song he is explaining the increase in dealers / hustlers in the country attributing to the fact that there are no Jobs and the Economy still under-performing. He is encouraging fellow Zimbos to keep on working, to survive. Hustlers Anthem.

9) Seh Calaz - Ngoma Rarira : On this song he is just singing about how Zimdancehall has grown and is improving the life of Ghetto Youths. He is empowering other Dancehall artists to keep on rocking.

The album is educational, socially conscious and full of advice which is very good regardless of the fact that many people expected the album to be full of turn up songs. There are no turn up tracks on the album. I suspect he will release singles to compensate for that in the coming months. In overall the album is awesome and will probably win the attention of the older listeners. The album is a change for Calaz, he is known for war and battles, now on this album amply titled rebirth he showed a new side of him which many did not know off. A rebirth/transformation for sure.

I enjoyed nearly all of the tracks on the album but if I am to chose my best three, would chose; Usamurove, Vabereki Vangu Rega Vacheme.

Proud Zimbo Rating: B (75%)
