Poptain - Redemption EP Review

Poptain stormed the music scene two years back and was then considered among the top urban artists in the country. However being famous has its drawbacks and last year he admitted to suffering from mental issues which made him take a break from music.

Beginning of this year he became active again, he seems rejuvenated and back to enjoying doing what he loves. He is even launching a record label.

To mark his return to music he has released this perfectly titled Redemption EP. In my experience EP's have been used when an artist wants to either test a new sound or when they have many songs left over from e previous project which they feel people need to hear, so which is which here??? Have got my copy of the project and today after some time of listening will be sharing my views and thoughts on the project.

1. Tenda Wandiona

The first track on the album is Poptain saying you should be grateful you have seen me, you should not assume things about me but try to see me personally and truly learn. Production is done well, arrangement of the track is okay.

2. Mbabvu Yangu

Poptain was quite comical on this track, his choice of words was quite refreshing, the songwriting is good on this track. The production is also refreshing, enjoyed the vibe of the track, arrangement is done well. This is a track that can easily grown on me.

3. Only You (ft Bongo Beats)

Poptain has joined the Amapiano craze with this lovely gospel track. Bongo Beats did a good job on production, the track is well arranged and the mood & vibe is on point. Poptain was also up to par on the vocals. Definitely the best track on the EP.

4. Nguva Yareba

The vibe of this track is solid, the production is done well. The afro vibe is executed well. Poptain was also good on the vocals delivering his signature performance.

5. Team Hombe (ft Herman)

They switched to a rhumba arrangement on this gospel themed track. They are saying we part of the big team, so don't play around with us. The track is produced well, the two artists managed to work together well.

So ya that's it for Poptain's comeback EP Redemption and have to say its a good project. It won't be among the top projects of the Year but its okay.

Production is done well, Poptain is definitely pushing more for an afro pop sound rather than Dancehall which he was known for. This is however not surprising as even his last tracks before he took a short break could hardly be classified as dancehall. He is definitely now positioning himself as a pop artist.

On the themes he tackled some  personal religious issues and love & relationships issues. You can pick how he has found his new courage in the gospel. Vocally he was as expected, the collaborations were also well done.

In conclusion it's an good project, no big hits on the project but the project will at least reassure his fans that he is back and ready.

My Rating : 6.5/10

Feel free to share your thoughts on the EP in the comments section below.
