5 Best and 5 Worst Albums of 2017

2017 has been quite an interesting year on the local scene. A number of artists have released album and have managed to review a number of those albums, my selection was guided by my Top 10 Albums I Am Looking forward to in 2017 which i published beginning of the year but it also expands to other albums I did not cover but managed to listen to. Have now finished covering all the albums I expected to cover and today will be sharing my best and worst albums of the year.

We'll start with the worst albums.

5. Andy Muridzo - Tichambotenderera
After his runaway success with Ngarizhambe in 2016 many expected him to carry on from there and solidify himself as one of the top 5 artists in the country but all that started to fall apart when he signed to military.

4. Peter Moyo - Mopao Makonzi
Peter Moyo greatly improved his instrumental arrangement on this project, and in some instances the instrumentals would match those of his late Iconic father. It all came crashing when it came time for him to sing, his vocals leave a loot to be desired. Once he polishes his vocals he can easily shoot to the top.

3. Soul Jah Love - Ndinofirapo
Jah Love was a having a superb year, his jam Pamamonya Ipapo dominated all year round and is probably competing for song of the year, so when he announced tgat he will be releasing an album we expected fireworks but the album failed to live up to the magic that his singles had.

2. Tehn Diamond - A Few Good Poems
Tehn re-released this album beginning of the year citing it was now mastered to his liking but it performed worse than the less  polished version. Tehn is one of the best rappers on the local scene but many a times he tries to be deep to the extent that his tracks start getting confusing and that is greatly hindering his career.

1. Ammara Brown - Ammartia
With all the hype surrounding Ammara this album is a huge disappointment. It does not have the energy we have come to expect from Ammara. She is not yet comfortable with her vocals as depicted by how they lack unison throughout the album, she tried to be dynamic but it all became a mess. She needs to find her sound. To cap it all off the best song on the track is a Tytan song...that says it all.

Now to the best albums of 2017

5. Few Kings - The Feeling Ain't Fear 2
This album caused me a lot of internal conflict but after all my reservation the album has this allure that I cannot avoid or resist. The guys showed they still have chemistry and are daring to address certain the social issues being experienced by the majority of Zimbos.
Few Kings The Feeling Aint Fear 2

4. Courtney Antipas - Transparent
This is arguably the least known album on the whole article but it one of the best projects released in 2017. Courtney Antipas proves why he is an icon in the rap game, his delivery was on point throughout. The album is well produced and is sounding fresh. That track Kayden takes you on a emotional journey in an amazing way.

3.  Sharky - Take Back The Land
Following up on a critically acclaimed project is a daunting task for anyone but Sharky dared and conquered. This album is distinctly better that Soko Matemai but it reatins the traditional signature Sharky sound. Sharky himself was superb throughout the project, delivering some very superb bars (homu homu, far away, take back tha land...etc).

2. Jah Prayzah - Kutonga Kwaro
The biggest artist in the country delivered a very solid project. Was not expecting to enjoy this album as much as I did but JP did a splendid job on this album. Many may link this album to politics but that does not take away the fact that the album is well made.

1. Mokoomba - Luyando
This is downright the best album i have listened to in 2017, its just in a class of its own. The production is superb and provides a refreshing raw sound as compared to any album this year. Luyando paints a picture of the Tonga way of life in a proud and artistic way which will serenade you all the time. This is the definition of a truly African Album. The vocals of Mathias Muzaza need to be heard for one to fully understand why  thousands all over the world are loving this band. The guitar prowess by Trust Samende is just too much, tooo good to be true.

So ya those are my worst and best albums of 2017. The year is done and dusted now and am very much looking forward to 2018.
