EP Review: Simba Tagz - Totenda EP

Simba Tagz is making some serious moves on the continental scene, he was behind the production of the hit jam Akube by Dotman and currently he has been working and touring with Mr Eazi. For his birthday he decided to release an EP as an appreciation to his fans for the support. Have managed to get my hands on a copy of the EP and today will be sharing my views and thoughts on the Totenda EP.

He was personally in charge of the production of this EP and he continued on this new modern afro beat sound that dominated his last album Natural Selection. Compared to his last project he has improved in terms of production. With his recent collaborations with Nigerian stars he borrowed some attributes from them and they are evident throughout the EP. Now below will be doing the usual track by track review:

1. Remember
The first track is dedicated to everyone who has lost someone important in their life. It's about remembering and cherishing the moments/memories of the people whom we have lost. The track is well produced, the instrumental is structured well, its modern and the synths are arranged in a way that will get you into a reflective mood.

2. Take It
This is a love jam and Simba Tagz is giving his heart to a lady he is crazy about. He describes how sweet and sexy the lady is...the attributes and features that made him fall for the lady. The  vocals are arranged in a way that compliments the instrumental well and the track comprises of some cheesy lines. Its all made to be appealing, not hard hitting or anything. The track is well produced, the instrumental is sounding good.

3. Last Time
Love the instrumental on this track, the guitar lead is superb and the reggaeton elements will get you dancing in no time. It has a lovely feel to it, it's bouncy and the flute was a very good addition. On this track Tagz is complimenting the lady that has taken his attention in the club, he is telling her not to be shy but dance for him like it's the last time. The vocals are well structured especially the "mwana" part and they complement the instrumental very well. Am loving the flute parts like crazy. This is the kind of track that need visuals.

4. Totenda Mwari
The title track on the album is about giving praise and thanksgiving to the Almighty Lord. Its a personal and emotional song from Tagz, despite all that he goes through, the negative plans aimed against him the Lord always protects and takes care of him. The saxophone on this track is just super lovely, it gives the track a jazzy and enchanting vibe that I am loving. The overall production is done very well.

5. Zvakanaka Remix
This was Tags'z biggest hit from his last album and he decided to add some dancehall flavour on this remix. The instrumental was already very well made and no alterations were made. The only change is the Boom Betto verse which blended with the flow of the track quite well. In overall this remains a good song and if you miss the Boom Betto verse one will not even recognize that it's the remix.

In overall this is a good EP, love the sound and instrumental arrangement. It may not include some thought-provoking themes and in some songs there are some cheesy lines but the overall feel of the EP is very good. Like I said in the beginning Tagz has borrowed certain attributes from the Nigerian artists and creating a good overall feel despite the project not containing hard hitting messages is one of them. Like his previous album this project will probably not be that big a hit on the local scene but it's entertaining to listen to and I recommend it.

My overall rating : Good/Average/Poor

What are your thoughts on the EP???
