Freeman - Kusuka EP Review

This has been a mixed year for the big artists in the dancehall genre, the so called veterans did not have explosive years as compared to the previous year(s). However among the lot Freeman managed to release a commendable project (Mukuru Wekambani) as compared to his peers (Winky D, Killer T, Seh Calaz, Soul Jah Love...etc) enjoyed his album more than the projects from the aforementioned peers. 2018 on the other hand belonged to new and upcoming stars such as Enzo Ishall, Bazooker, Jah Signal...etc, they gave the veterans a serious run for their money, forcing them to go back to the studio and make something for the festive season, all of them have released something these past 4 weeks.

Now as I stated that I enjoyed Freeman's album more than the others so among the lot I was looking forward to his festive projects more compared to the others. He has finally released his festive project packaged as an EP. The project contains only 5 tracks, which makes my job a bit easier. So below will be sharing my thoughts and views on the EP.

1. Ambuya Nehanda (feat Nutty O)
The only collaboration on the album talks about the struggles that young people face on a day to day basis. Ambuya Nehanda is an iconic figure from the first Chimurenga who inspired people to rise and fight the colonizers, so on this track the artists are airing their struggles looking for inspiration and someone to lead us out of the mess we are in. The production is done quite well, the instrumental compliments the vocals very well. Both artists delivered solid performances and their different styles work well together.

2. Roadblock
This is an interesting jam which highlights how some people cause your life to stop progressing and once they are out of you life everything starts moving. Freeman is singing to his ex telling her that since she left his life everything started moving, she was more like a roadblock in his life. He also delivered a superb performance on the vocals, showcasing his unique style that has made him an icon in the music sector. The production is also done quite well, again the instrumental complements the vocals well.

3. Kusuka
The title track of the EP is about a dance style. One of the biggest dancehall jams of 2018 is about a dance move (Enzo Ishall - Kanjiva) and Freeman has decided to introduce his own dance. The production is minimal and on point, love the instrumental arrangement its one of those that can get you dancing even without the vocals. Freeman again delivered a solid performance on the track, he blended with the instrumental very well. This track is screaming for some good visuals, hope they are already in the works, with some deserving visuals this will be a massive jam.

4. Mabori
This is Freeman's version of Justin Beiber's hit track Sorry. They added a dancehall feel to the track to give it a differentiating element and feel. On the track Freeman is addressing this lady whom he feels is a groupie and gives attention to whoever is on top at that moment. The HKD boss delivered a solid vocal performance, his style shines on such an arrangement. He also delivered some interesting bars on the track which makes the track interesting to listen to.

5. Imi Amai
This was the first single released from the EP and was already a huge fan of the track by the time the EP dropped. Freeman on this track is confessing his love to this lady that he loves, he is baring his all saying he does not have much but he will give her all the love he has and he does not care of her past as we all have a past. Freeman's performance on this track is probably the best I have heard from him from some time, he was in top form. The production is also done superbly well, No Limits did a superb job with the riddim (90's Riddim).

So ya that's it for the EP, short and straight to the point. Have enjoyed listening to this EP, the production is done well and Freeman was solid on the vocals throughout. As a festive package this will do well for the HKD Boss. Enjoyed his 2018 album Mukuru Wekambani but because of how compact this EP is I prefer it more to his album.
My Overall Rating: 8/10

What are your thoughts on the EP??
