Top 5 Tracks: Illanga

On the first episode of top 5 tracks for 2018 we'll be looking at one of the iconic groups to emerge on the local scene Illanga.

Illanga is a ndebele word that means rising sun. The group was made up of an array of talented artists namely; Busi Ncube (vocals & percussion), Don Gumbo (bass guitar), Andy Brown (guitar & vocals), Chinx Chingaira (vocals), Keith Farquharson (keyboard), Gibson Nyoni (drums), Virgilio Ignacia and Adam Chisvo (percussion).

The group was formed in 1986 but rose to prominence after guys like Chinx, Busi and Keith joined a few  years later and they went on to release two  well received albums; Silver & Gold and Visions Foretold. The group did not last long as artists like Andy Brown left to pursue solo careers. They however released a compilation of their best tracks of their rather short stint into one Greatest Hits compilation and that made my research easy for this episode.

5. Siyalonda
This takes my fifth spot. I just love the instrumental and arrangement of this track. It sounds very lovely and its one of those tracks whereby even if you do not understand what they are singing about you can still enjoy.

4. Tshayikuba
Not as known as the top 3 tracks but it's one of my favourite. Love the production and instrumental arrangement on this track. The vocals are also well done.

3. Substitution
Love is sometimes a complicated issue and this track addresses that moment in a relationship where you are no longer enjoying and start looking elsewhere. Love the production of this track, the way they arranged the vocals is done very well, its definitely one of my favourite tracks from the group.

2. True Love
This is probably the most known track from Illanga and indeed its a fantastic track. Everybody wants True Love so this track speaks to everyone, the production is done superbly well. It's a true definition of a classic track, I see this song being loved by generations to come.

1. Shosholoza
This is my outright favourite track from Illanga which is a bit funny because I am not 100 sure of what the track means but when it comes to music the language does not stop one from enjoying given all the other elements are on point and this is one such track. It's one of those tracks I can play countless times and still not get bored.
So those are my top 5 tracks from Illanga. Feel free to comment with your 5 best songs by Illanga.
