R&B Music In Zim

R&B in Zim

This genre is still largely mistaken as urban grooves by many in the country. Rhythm and Blues is now a stand alone genre in Zimbabwe and has a lot of amazing songs that can melt anyone out there. RnB is about love and other intimate issues, it requires great vocal ability and mellow quality beats, this makes it a bit difficult to do and that's evident by the few artists in that genre.

In Zimbabwe this genre is quite big and includes the following artists:

Trevor Dongo - Undoubtedly the King of RnB in Zimbabwe. This guy has an amazing voice and his songs are on point, coupled with the instrumental being made by Legendary Award Winning Producer MacDonald 'MacDee' Chidavaenzi. Their combination has produced a wide list of hits (Nerunako, Tivanyadzise, Ndashamisika, Musikana Wangu, Ndawana Zano, African Girl, Nemoyo...etc). Trevor Dongo has 4 albums to date {Ndozviita Sei, Ruvarashe, First Verse & Two Steps To Go}. His hit song Ndashamisika from the amazing album First Verse was number 1 on all the major radio stations in the end of year countdowns, That's a record yet to be broken .

Cindy Munyavi - The queen of Zim RnB. She possesses a powerful and beautiful voice. Currently she records at the Bryce Nation Studios. She has been in the music game for over 8 yrs and has been belting out hits after hits. She gave us hit songs such as ( Nerudo, Appointment, Nguva Ichauya, Ndidzorere Moyo Wangu, Ndini Ndinaye, Kukuda, Parere Moyo...etc) Her song Parere Moyo had her nomminted for the 2014 AFRIMMA's and she walked away with the award. She is one of the few Zim artists who know how to make a great music videos. Her upcoming album 'Music,Vocals,Cindy' is promising to be an amazing album judging by the success of the two singles she released (Summer Time & Ndichiri Mupenyu)

Sanii Makhalima - The Godfather of Zim RnB. Has been serenading the nation for more than 10 years now. From the days he made the hit Usadaro till now, Sanii has maintained his standard. Currently he is working on reviving his Record Label 'The House of Ayeye', previously known as Umsindo records. The stable fell apart as he had to deal with pressing family matters but now it seems he is back. His 2014 song Ndipe Rudo was voted best song on the Power Fm top 100 countdown. He has a long list of hits, chart toppers stretching over the years which has earned him the term 'Godfather of Zim RnB. He Started singing his love songs in the days when Zim urban local Music was still finding its feet. His brother Delani Makhalima, currently a DJ at ZiFM Stereo, was one of the first urban music producers in the country aand has played a large role in establishing the career of his brother Sanii. Sanii has started the year on a strong note with a super great song Mashoko. We crossing our fingers for an album from the man.

Tererai Mugwadi - Currently she is quiet but when she releases a song we will definitely be glued to our radios. Tererei was once the queen of love songs when she released songs such as Sands of Time, Waenda. We just had to mention her for she possess an heavenly voice and her chorus on the hit song NaMwari testifies to that. However she has been quiet for a while, she keep promising us new songs but currently nothing has been released. We continue to wait (Fingers crossed)

Ngoni Kambarami - Has been in the industry for more than 10 years. He began his long career with classics such as Ndiwe Chete, Wakaenda, Bvuma..etc. From that time he kept going and releasing hits. He went quiet for a couple of years due to personal issues. When he returned he announced his return with  a great album Still which carried the  classic Wobvira. He has recently been signed to Abra Records and we looking forward to many classics from the gentleman.

Nyasha Timbe - Based from the town of Marondera, Nyasha Timbe a young RnB/Soul artist who has the potential of taking the King of RnB slot. He announced himself on the grand stage last year with the song Zvaramba (Walking Away). The song was an instant classic and topped the music charts on all the major radio stations at some time during the year. This year he has given us the song Chishamiso, the song is lovely and of the same quality as Zvaramba. It may not be bigger but he has maintained a great standard. The future looks bright for this young fellow, Looking forward to his next album.

Taurai Mandebvu - He started of as Roki's dancer and evolved into a well known artists. He launched his career in 2003 with the song Chido Changu, his song  Nyeredzi made him a household name as it became an instant classic. However his music back then were not purely RnB. That all changed when he released his amazing album Better Man. This album solidified him as an RnB powerhouse, his songs Better Man, Ndimbundikire became hit songs from that album. Taurai usally mixes his song with other genres (Madi madi, My love, I like what I See), therefore his music is not purely RnB as compared to Trevor D's music. He may not be the best RnB artist in Zim but he always releases beautiful songs.

These are just a few of the artists on the Zim RnB scene. Feel Free to comment on others that have been committed from the list.
