Bagga Sang About Mvura!!! Who else sang about Water??? and why Water??!

Water is life, this is a fact every one of us gets to accept. Its made up of simple chemical structure H2O but is so vital to the existence of all the complex life here on earth. Water is the lifeblood of life here on earth, it waters and nourishes the plants, it quench's the thirst of all animals and humans, without it there is no life. On top of all that we can literally witness it also seems water holds great spiritual significance, its seen as a good sign in basically every religion!!!. So its no surprise that artists sometimes use this literal and spiritual significance of water to deliver their messages. Have searched online for local artists who have done so and today will be sharing with you some of the best tracks about water and try to decipher their messages.

After some searching these are the best tracks about water that I have came across:

Bagga - Mvura

The  most obvious one to start at the moment is Mvura by Bagga, its among the most imoressive songs of 2024. On this track Bagga is yearning for cleansing in his life, he is asking for water to wash away the bad spirits that follow him, he wants a clean spirit and life where he can succeed and achieve his dreams. The track struck a chord with many young people in Zim, as many feel need a similar cleansing in their lives. Bagga also delivered the track with some sick visuals.

Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited - Mvura Ngainaye.

The legend is crying out unto the ancestors to intercede for them with the creator so the country can receive rains,  for the ground to become fruitful. Mukanya is crying out that here is hunger and endless struggles, the people are suffering and need some relief, some rains.

Jonah Sithole - Tinokumbira Mvura Ngainaye.

Taken from the superb and timeless Sabhuku album (a collectors album) by the legendary guitarist Jonah Sithole. On this track Jonah is crying out unto the creator for the rains to come, he is crying out for the end of suffering and pain. Water in this instance is both used in literal and symbolic terms. This is my favorite of the whole list, the production is just superb, the guitars sing along the vocals beautifully.

Gudoguru - Mvura

Gudoguru took a different approach to the topic of water, he is likening life to water. He is saying "nyangwe mvura ikadeuka"/ "even if the water spills", you should continue living, you should keep going, you must carry on looking after the kids. The cycle of water continues despite it spilling, so life keep on going despite death.

Mary Anibal - Mvura

Mary is saying prepare fully for what you want so when the rain comes it will grow. She is depicting the joy one gets when they know their time is about to come, when one hears thunder in the skies and gets excited knowing the rains (breakthrough) is here. Also love how this track is made, the arrangement is beautiful.

Oliver Mtukudzi - Mvura

The superstar in crying out unto the Lord for mercy, for relief in the form of rainwater,  he is urging those who have done evil things to cause such wrath from the Lord above to confess so the land can receive some rains and be in abundance. In Shona culture when one does what is taboo, it leads to the ancestors and creator turning their backs (removing their favour) on that family and community, that then leads to droughts and untold struggles. So Tuku is urging those who have caused the creator to forsake them to confess  and appease them so there will be grace and favour upon the community again.

Tinashe Magacha - Mvura Ngainaye

Tinashe delivered his own version of the iconic Let It Rain into Shona on this track. He is crying for Rain from the Creator so the seeds they have put into the ground get to grow, so that the desires of their hearts get to be realized.

Mukoma Ketai & The Simba Brothers

Mukoma Ketai is crying unto the creator to bring the rains and cleanse the earth of diseases. When it rains the flowing water does indeed wash away some dirt that causes diseases but metaphorically this track is asking for divine intervention in the lives we live today which is filled with many struggles.

So those are the few track I have to manage to find that are all about water and it seems the main significance of water is cleaning and cleansing. On many tracks the artists depict the raining of water as answer from the Creator, the end too many problems and suffering in our lives. It comes to literally clean the streets and also the soul.

There is a sort of energy, and liveliness you see from nature after rain water, its very different from when you water your garden with a hose. There is extra dimension that gets unlocked and it appears for many we need such unexplainable rejuvenation within us, we need some rain for the soul.

What significance does water have in your life, do you agree with most artists on this list?? Feel free to share some of the songs that I may have overlooked in the comments section.
