Project Review: Verseless - Veryus

Verseless is undoubtedly one of the most interesting producers on the local scene, he is versatile and brings a unique sound to music industry. He released a number of compilations in the past 15 months and he seems to continuing with the trend this year. He has released his VERYUS project this week; he was releasing a new song each day for the past week. Now that all the tracks have been released it's time for me to give you my thoughts on the project.

The project contains 7 tracks and will be doing a track by track review below:

1. Fluid feat Simba Tagz - Saviour
They went for an afro beat/dancehall inspired instrumental on this track. The beat is structured in a standard way and is sounding okay. The artists delivered some good performances here, Fluid stood his ground and Tagz delivered his usual signature performance. The track is about telling that lady that you love that you will do all you can to earn her trust and take good care of her. Its about promising the lady you love that you will be their Saviour, that person who will protect and provide for whatever they need.

2. Mile feat Marques - Ain't Thinking About You
The intro is a bit unusual but you will feel the track will have a techno edge to it. It continues with that strange vibe then as the vocals commence a dance synth is added to highlight the pattern and coupled with Mile's smooth vocals the track finally clicks and that's when you start bumping your head to the rhythm. The instrumental draws you into the track and on the chorus it switches up to full dance mode and you just can't help it but fall deep in love with the jam. Superb work by Verseless. On the vocals Mile was at par, he delivered a superb performance, he managed to match the instrumental very well, he won me over here...he just got one more fan. Marques did well on his part also. The track is just aimed at those people that just want to drain all your energy and joy.

3. uBu - Ngizophakama
They went for a kind of soulful sound on this track, the keyboard sets the mood for the jam, it softens/mellows the jam. The instrumental has a lot of rises and its banking on them, be it the shakers in the intro, or the bass leading to the kicks or the major one leading to the drop (that part from 01:20). The production is done quite well, another good job by Verseless. uBu did a nice job on the vocals, she managed to blend well with the instrumental.

4. Rue - Down
From the onset one will feel that the track will be on a house kind of tip. I'm a huge fan of deep house and I have to say the instrumental is sounding good. The structure of the track is standard and will fit perfectly if played alongside any European deep house jam. The track has a feel good vibe about it. Rue did a good job on the vocals, she delivered a commendable vocal performance. This is a love song and Rue is saying I will love you all the way Down despite of those forces and people that do not want us to be together. Lovely jam.

5. Verseless feat. Q Sound, Mile, Sharky, Nick Kuraz & Synik - Life Of A Party.
This is a 'redo' of a similar titled track from Verseless's Antithesis Album from last year, uhhmm nah its just the same track but with less artists.......yes less artists. The instrumental is mellow and is sounding quite good. This track talks about a situation that many are facing these days, you find a lady whom you feel is the one but then she still wants the life of a party so it's hard to plan anything serious with her. The artists gave good performances; Mile was lovely on the hook, Sharky was good, love when he starts rapping like he is reciting a detembo. Synik was also at par with the others and I have to say he sounds a lot like Tehn Diamond.

6. Chengeto Brown - Nightym Luv
Chengeto Brown announced her arrival onto the music scene with Wachu Want, a dancehall jam that is receiving a lot of love at the moment and in a way I expected this track to be on a dancehall tip and I was not wrong. They went for a reggaton inspired dancehall jam and reggaeton rarely misses the spot, it just has this allure to it, you just start bumping side to side. So ya the instrumental is sounding good, love the rock guitar addition towards the end. Chengeto was also at par on the vocals, she delivered a solid performance. On this track she is saying to her man that he drives her crazy with his love and she can't seem to get enough of him, so she is gonna give him that Nightym Luv that he (and her) need everyday. Lovely jam.

7. Marques - Type Yamudhara
Marcques is finding it quite hard to escape the Zunguza shadow and on this track rather than trying to escape that they embraced it. The instrumental kind of borrows some elements/ideas from Zunguza, the high energy kind of instrumental brings out the best in Marques. The overall production is done quite well, nice job by Verseless. Marcques delivered a signature performance on the vocals, blending well with the beat, his hoarse voice works well in such a setup. On the track Marques is just talking/describing his perfect lady.

In overall the project is quite good, the production is done very well. Verseless showed his versatility and the artists included in the project all did well. Verseless is pushing this new sound of his and its obviously going to take some time in order for it to get to the forefront of local music, but unlike on his last projects this project has potential radio hits, Down and Nightym Luv. Down may not specifically offer something new to the house genre but its well made and will get some traction if marketed well. Nightym Luv already appears to have all the ingredients to dominate radio. it also needs to be marketed well and its screaming for visuals....if they are to make one video for the project, it should be Nightym Luv. Also Ain't Thinking About You can get some traction, the instrumental is superb and Mile was awesome.

My overall rating: Poor/Average/Good

What are your thoughts on the project??
