Obert Chari & ZCC Mbungo Stars - Mebo
Once in a while you come across a song that you had no idea existed but blows you away. Mebo by Obert Chari is one such song, had no idea that this track existed until this weekend (yea I'm late I know). The track has been out for about 3 months now and is getting a lot of love in may bars all over the country, especially in the outskirts.
Managed to listen to the song for quite some time and I have to say this is one deep and unique song. During a quick search of other songs from Obert I realized he is a gospel artist, who specializes in Mgidi music, which is native to the ZCC Church and on this track he decided to experiment with a love theme and it has paid off.
The mgidi elements are all over the track but mixed with some sungura influences. One of the charms of this track is the various influences which makes it hard to categorize the track into any specific genre. The production is done very well, the instrumental does a great job providing a solid base for the vocals and despite fusing various genres the instrumental remained grounded.
The vocals are done well and in some ways remind me of the Chimbetu's especially on the harmonization. Whilst looking for the title asked a couple of people at this bar and quite a number of them said one of the Chimbetu's sang this song and I kind of believed them until I started searching for the track online. Regardless of that the vocals are raw and quite basic which in this case is perfect because they fit the sincerity mood of the whole track.
On the song Obert is dating Mebo, a girl from a different class and upbringing to his so he is singing to her highlighting their differences and Mebo keeps on saying I love You as You Are. He is afraid Mebo wont be able to tolerate the life he lives for he has nothing much to offer yet he is still unemployed, he has no fancy stuffs, he does not wear matching clothes, he does not have the swag that someone of her class may need and in all those cases Mebo keeps reassuring her that anongomuda akadaro. This is a track that showcases the purest of love, having someone who does not feel ashamed of her partner despite him not living up to the standards of other around her. It also showcases a guy who is baring herself to the woman he did not even think would give him a chance, declaring his love and also ensuring that she know what she is getting into.
The visuals also do justice to the song, they are not fancy, extra colourful or too much out there but they tell a visual story better than most videos out there. There is a story-line which flows in unison with the vocals and theme of the track which makes the song more powerful as every viewer will be able to understand and relate. Love that with a limited budget they stuck to the basics of a good video and it paid off.

In conclusion am loving this song, its one of those hidden gems that i'm glad I came across. It just showed me that as a arts blogger I need to continuously expand my listening base and not only concentrate on certain genres and artists for there are many hidden gems out there.
Take a listen to the track and share your thoughts on the track??
