Freeman - David & Goliath Album Review
If consistency was a person Freeman is that person. The dude has been dropping solid projects for years, its hard to think of a year Freeman released a subpar project. He is the best when it comes to album in the entire Zim Dancehall fraternity, noone comes close. He is not a perfect artist, well noone is, his live performances is still not up to the level I feel he should be at now but regardless of that for over ten years now he has been a constant on our playlist and is not showing signs of slowing down.
Another thing I highly respect is the team the HKD Boss has around him, they are doing an amazing job. Freeman's image is solid and his online presence is well curated. Well done to the team.
Now onto this new album, it's no secret that his past projects have been good. Yes you may love one album more than the other but you cannot say the other is bad. So how does this new one fare?? Have been on a break but once this project dropped I jumped online ans started streaming and today will be sharing with you my views and thoughts on the album.
1. Komborera
Freeman decided to start the project on a gospel tip. On this track he is asking for the Lord to bless all those who everyday leave their families to go and work to make ends meet. The track is well produced, the arrangement is on point. Freeman was also solid on the vocals.
2. Ndibvunzewo
This is the question many have over their lives, many try very hard but it never seems to work out for them. Despite learning, studying, sweating life never seems to change whilst others just apply the least of efforts and they succeed. The production is done well, love the arrangement of the track and instrumental. Freeman was also at par on the vocals, delivering a solid performance.
3. David & Goliath
Freeman is motivating all those who are facing tough trials in their pursuit of the life they want. He is saying success takes time, never give up but keep the hope alive and push to keep on moving. Just as God led and blessed young David to defeat tha giant Goliath, he will also make a way for you. The track is produced well, arrangement is on point and Freeman was superb on the vocals. A fitting title track.
4. Mukuru
On this track the HKD Boss is saying do what makes you happy once in a while, problems ams situations will always be there. This is something I force myself to do whenever I feel am getting into depression, I force myself to enjoy with the little I have. It's definitely advice that is needed by many Zimbos. Production is okay. Freeman was solid on the vocals.
5. Zimbabwean Queen (ft Chris Martin)
The collabo many will definitely be waiting for is dedicated to all the Zimbabwean Queens. The HKD Boss team up with international reggae star Chris Martin on this one, the collaboration works, the different styles of the artist blends well. The production is well done, love the fact that Freeman sang mostly in Shona, it ensures the song remains Zimbabwean.
6. Mjolo
Given the current suicides over relationships (Mjolo) Freeman is reminding many that your life is worth more than any relationship you may get into, so as hard as it is learn to accept various outcomes and move on.
7. Distance (ft Poptain)
The HKD Boss teamed up with Poptain on this track, they are saying to their other half we are forced to be apart by the struggles to make ends meet. I have to go and work, but will be back for you. The track is produced well. Poptain and Freeman managed to work together well.
8. Chitsike
The HKD boss is saying he sometimes feel there are some generational curses that are stopping him from succeeding in life. You may try many things that are easy to many but you somehow fail.
9. Vakomana veDrip
Freeman is advising young ladies that these so called boys of swag (drip) are not serious, they just love to enjoy and avoid real commitment. The production is well done, Freeman was good on the vocals.
10. Wakadyiswa (ft Nyasha David)
Freeman teamed up with award winning vocalist Nyasha David on this track where they are saying if its a love potion that's making me love you like this, please do give me, because am all for you. The track is well produced, the arrangement is solid definitely on point. The two artists blended very well, their styles work well together. This is going to be a favourite of many couples and rightly so.
11. Maruva
The Dokta is saying in life learn to give plaudits where its due. When someone does something good, applaud them there and don't wait till someone is no longer there to acknowledge the good they did. When your wife/husband does a good thing applaud them, let's all learn to be appreciative. The production is okay. Freeman is solid on the vocals.
12. Nizabwela (ft Towela)
On this track Freeman is saying to his lady that I know you miss me but i'm still out there working and will come home once I have something to show for my efforts. As a father I have to provide so I may be away for some time working for the family. The theme is similar to that on the track Distance. Production is done well.
13. Yeah Yeah
On the last track on the album Freeman is urging people to loosen up and enjoy. He is saying sometimes people just want to hear music and stories that help then refresh, life should not be serious all the time.

So ya that's it for the album David & Goliath and have to say Freeman has again delivered.
The production is well done throughout this project, Freeman as usual works with various producers to ensure his album has a wide range of arrangements, which makes the project entertaining to listen to.
Freeman on this project is asking for blessings in his hustles. You can clearly feel that the HKD Boss is in a space where he making a lot of sacrifices for his family to have the life he dreams for them. It's a stage where most of Zimbos are at right now, most are missing out on time with family as they are always out working. Tracks such as; Komborera, David & Goliath, Ndibvunzewo, Distance, Nizabwela, Maruva and Chitsike all in a way address the battle one will experience on the road to one's desired future. The other remaining tracks are for loosening up and enjoying, obviously with Freeman we always get some love jams and Wakadyiswa and Zimbabwean Queen we get just that.
Freeman deliveried his signature performance on this project. The featured artists all did well, the flagship collaboration being the Chris Martin one. My favourite is however on Wakadyiswa where he teamed up with Nyasha David.
To conclude this is a solid offering from Freeman, its definitely better that his project last year. The major theme of the project comes at a good time where many Zimbos need some motivation in their hustles. The production is done well throughout and for someone who has never listened to Freeman before this album will give a solid summary of what he is capable of and what he is all about. I recommend this project. It wil definitely be among the best Dancehall projects of the Year.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
