10 Albums I'm Looking Forward To In 2020
It now traditional that at the beginning of each year I share with you the projects I will be looking forward to the most that year. Last year had quite a fufilling year in that regard as a most of the albums I was looking forward to all dropped (Mbeu's The Mhodzi Diaries, Hope Masike's The Exorcism, Alexio Kawara's Oyi, Victor Kunonga's Ndatsva...just to mention a few).
This year as we start a new decade I will be sharing with you another 10 albums I cant wait to listen to. So some of the albums have not yet been named so will label those Untitled but will specify the artist.
1. Mokoomba - Untitled.
Expected this album last year, however the hints have been strong towards end of 2019 that something new is brewing. Luyando was a solid album and will definitely be on e lookout for the follow up.
2. Janet Manyowa - Untitled
At the launch of the single Ndimi she confirmed that the single was leading us into an album. Enjoyed her last two albums and will be very much looking forward to this new one. Will be interested in seeing how she will progress as an artists, how she will diversify or expand her sound.
3. ExQ - Untitled
In 2019 he only released an Ep with two tracks and that carried him throughout the whole year, Zuva Rese feat Ti Gonzi was one of the best tracks of 2019. Mr Putiti is on a roll and I don't expect that to end anytime soon, whenever he drops the whole industry listens
4. Jah Prayzah - Untitled
The biggest artist in the country took an off year last year in terms of albums. His last album and the features & singles he released kept him on people's playlists. The big question is how will be the sabbatical break inspire him.
5. Sulumani Chimbetu - Untitled
Sulu was supposed to drop this album in 2019 but that did not happen. It's been a unusually long break for the Dendera kingpin, he needs to show he still has it. This year has to be the year he gives us the long awaited album.
6. Asaph - Kingsvilla3
Asaph released the People's Rapper EP last year and it was one of the best hip hop projects of 2019. On the EP he hinted that Kingsvilla3 is in the works and am hoping it drops this year. The first two projects in the series solidified Asaph as the best storyteller in the game.
7. Alick Macheso - Untitled
The legendary artists was testing a number of new tracks last year at live shows and also confirmed that he was already working on a new album. Given his release schedule it all points to the album dropping this year. On the last album despite the lower production relatively lower production quality he showed glimpses of his old self and many are looking forward to the follow up.
8. Joyful Praise Choir - Untitled
This group won me over last year, bumped into them and loved their performances and music. I am impressed by their originality and how they embrace the traditional sound of Zim. Their momentum is growing and many are starting to take notice of them so this year they should release something and keep the momentum going. I'm very much hoping we get something new from the group.
9. Takura - Untitled
Mr Okay Okay had a relatively quiet year in 2019 by his standards. He has however been hinting of new stuff in 2020 and will definitely be waiting for the projects to drop. Am waiting to see if he will deliver something better than his Relationship Goals EP which is his best to date.
10. Mbeu & The Mhodzi Tribe - Untitled
Mbeu is currently my favorite artist in the whole of Zim, am loving everything he is releasing. For the past two yearhs he has delivered solid projects, in fact his past two albums have been my albums of the year. He is currently in the mode of releasing an album every year and I expect that to continue this year.
So ya those are the ten projects I am looking forward to the most in 2020. Feel free to share the albums you are waiting for the most.
