Gemma Griffiths - Gemma Album Review

Image
Gemma Griffiths has been serenading us with lovely music for some time now. Its quite surprising that this is her debut album because she has been in the game for some time now, had to go to her profile and check!!, yeah this is the first project she calls an Album. The most impressive aspect about Gemma is how she is confident with her style and art, she knows that she is the only white artist in the mainstream local scene in Zimbabwe and doesn't want that to define her career. She chose to put in the work to prove she can hold her own, that she is as good an artist as any. Over the past couple of years Gemma has proven she is capable, she can adapt when needed, she can make the hits and compete with the best. She has won over many Zimbos over the years because of her resilience, work and creativity. Going forward would love to start seeing her on the lineups on shoes, concerts and festivals, it will be good for her relationship with her fans.  The debut album has dropped and afte...

My Favourite Mbira Tracks

Image
Mbira music is so beautiful yet misunderstood by many Zimbabweans. Colonization left many afraid of the Mbira instrument, there is a growing acceptance of it but for many they feel uneasy when they hear it, some don't even dare talk about it. The sad part about the effect s of colonization is that the Mbira is the only instrument that we as Zimbabweans have made, its 100% ours yet we have been made to hate and fear it!!. So sad.  It has been a vital instrument for our people for generations, its so interlinked with our culture, religion and identity that you cannot separate Zimbabwe with the Mbira. It hold a lots of power, physically and spiritually, its one instrument where if you listen to it, it moves you. Despite the image many have of the Mbira and that pushed by some mbira players who are always scruffy and dirty we are now a shift in the conduct and appearance of the new age Mbira players. They still do not conform to the western definition of looks and appearance, there is ...

Jah Prayzah - Ndini Mukudzeyi Album Review

Image
Jah Prayzah has been on a roll with his past releases, his last offering which was a double album release of Chiremerera and Maita Baba was well received, both albums were solid but it was Chiremerera which excelled the most, come awards season it was crowned Album of the year. Those albums followed up on Gwara which was another superb offering that was received very well by Zimbabweans all over. This run has made JP the biggest artist in the country so when he announced that a new album was in the works you can imagine the hype and expectation that comes with that announcement. The major expectation was can he continue of this insane upward trajectory?, can he outdo Chiremerera?, can he retain his crown as the top artist in the nation?? His album launch for Chiremerera held the record for attendance for  local live show and this new one is expected to surpass that record. Now that the album is out I have to update that he surpassed his past attendance record, Old Hararians  w...

Kayflow - Nyamadrive ll EP Review

Image
Kayflow is one of the most impressive artist in the Hip Hop genre right now, he has been dropping big tracks left right and center, he has a style and brand that many are relating to. He is strategically cultivating a solid following, by pursuing a brand of art that is different from the generic popular style and with each release you can see how his brand is growing.  The first Nyamadrive EP was received well by fans in the genre and some were even calling for the album to be crowned album of the year, it did not but it gives you an idea of how good the album was. Personally did not get to do a review but listened to it and it did deserve the hype. Am a big fan of his single Mudendere , its embodies the entire style that Kayflow is going for, striking visuals, catchy hooks and solid bars on the verses.  Now he has released the follow up to the well received Nyamadrive I by releasing the second chapter of the project; Nyamadrive II. Have managed to listen to the project and to...

Sulumani Chimbetu - Tsapo Album Review

Image
Consistency seems hard for Sulu these days when it comes to music releases. On the other hand the competition in the sungura genre has grown very much over the past 5 years and its easy for one to be left behind. Sulu last released Entanglement in 2020, which had Bvuma Kusara as the leading single, the album was received warmly by Dendera fans, I was quite impressed with the album but as time moved I felt its quickly faded into obscurity, it lacked staying power and I hope this new one will be better in that regard. The biggest advantage that Sulu has and that made sure even after such a long release sabbatical we still talk about him is the Chimbetu name and Legacy he inherited from his Legendary father, its a name that will last a couple of generations. He needs to have his house in order, reduce scandals and get to business in order to ensure Dendera does not fade and also pass the legacy to the next generation. He has a tall order to get his name back to the top of the music indu...
